This process requires expensive equipment, extensive labor, and lengthy testing times. Purdue Researchers have developed a method to help reduce the very costly and destructive testing that is associated with fatigue life prediction. This invention incorporates a new method for selecting machining conditions for hard turning processes based on measured and/or predicted residual stress distributions and other variables. These properties are essential inputs for building models that can predict fatigue life, which can be based on the concept of crack propagation.
