Essential Functions

  • Ensure that Purdue Foundry has capability to support the growth of Purdue companies, including:
    • Management of current and future investment funds
    • Expanding and managing a network of investors (focused on angel investors and early stage venture firms)
    • Providing business growth advice to client companies, including expanding and managing a network of individuals to advise and/or lead Purdue startups
  • Investment fund management
    • Lead the management of the operations of PRF’s startup investment funds: Foundry Investment Fund, Ag Fund (aka Ag-Celerator), and Purdue Startup Fund.
    • Coordinate the management/oversight of PRF’s existing portfolio of startup investments; conducting regular collaborative activities with Accounting, OTC and others as necessary.
    • Identify and execute upon opportunities to increase Foundry’s early-stage investment offerings.
    • Preparation for, and execution of, all investment transactions (new) and corporate actions as necessary for holdings (existing).
  • Business growth advisory
    • Institute and manage a system of regular interaction and updates with prioritized portfolio companies.
    • Lead the staff in working directly with client companies to develop customized capital funding, talent acquisition strategies and associated workshops; manage staff in hosting appropriate events/visits to accomplish both.
  • Collaboration with Venture Creation
    • Leverage the talent and investor networks in collaboration with Foundry Venture Creation.
    • Develop and deliver content for Foundry clients relevant to capital and talent attraction.

 Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensure procedures are in place for drafting, reviewing and/or approval of all appropriate legal and investment documentation associated with both new investments from the funds and existing portfolio management needs.
  • Maintain a meaningful and impactful presence in Central Indiana, Statewide and National early-stage investment and entrepreneurial ecosystem communities. 
  • Professional Standing/Community Involvement
    • Appropriate association and board activity to enhance Purdue Foundry’s visibility in constituent communities (e.g. InBIA, Venture Club of Indiana, Innovation Showcase, National Venture Capital Association, Angel Capital Association)
  • Integration with Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship and a variety of other University Entrepreneurship activities as appropriate.
  •  Staffing
    • Ensure that staffing is appropriate relative to size, needs, and responsibilities.
    • Provide supervision, training, development, guidance, and oversight to staff.
  • Services
    • Continually evaluate the effectiveness of services/programs and work to ensure their optimization.
    • Provide guidance and direction in creation of new services as necessary.
  • Oversee effective data management processes overall, but specifically for:
    • Investment performance metrics
    • The Connections compilation of executive summaries
    • Inventory of capital funding for all portfolio companies.
  • Public Relations
    • Ensure publicity of noteworthy activities in various media channels through PRF’s marketing and communications group.
    • Present information regarding the Purdue Foundry as appropriate to visitors, interest groups and community leaders
    • Maintain metrics data that will demonstrate the overall impact of our activities.
  • Other duties as identified.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated abilities to work closely with both the academic and business communities as a facilitator for the transfer of information, concepts, cooperation and collaboration.
  • Proven abilities to interact comfortably and effectively with senior business leaders, investors, fund managers, professional service providers and university officials in the facilitation of projects.
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication, in one-on-one settings, small groups and more formal settings with audiences of 50+ listeners.
  • Regular and reliable attendance are requirements of this position.


  • Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences, engineering, information technology, or business administration / management. 
  • Master’s In Business Administration degree preferred, especially if undergraduate degree is in a technical (i.e., science or engineering) field.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of specific experience in significant leadership roles in business management with exhibited experience in startups and/or capital funding.
  • Direct experience with small business, start-up ventures or with high technology innovations and/or ventures, preferably in a leadership role.
