This is a great opportunity for a dynamic and self-motivated Scientist to join our fast-growing and collaborative team. This is a lab-based role with a focus on nucleic acids isolation, PCR and NGS library preparation skills to characterize gene edited plants. This Scientist role is to lead a team and directly participate in the genotyping of gene edited plants.

As Plant Characterization Lead, you will…

  • Lead and help establish a high-throughput plant molecular characterization pipeline and be responsible for delivery of decisionable data by the requested deadlines
  • Receive protocols developed by the R & D team for nucleic acid isolation, NGS library preparation, and next generation sequencing and optimize them for a production-scale environment
  • Be responsible for quality control
  • Supervise a team of Research Associates and Scientists, train and instruct lab personnel in specific plant characterization protocols
  • Work with other Scientists and Research Associates to plan and execute experiments, conduct analyses, record data and report results related to one or more projects
  • Interpret data; maintain an accurate, comprehensible, and current laboratory journal
  • Communicate results in written technical reports and oral presentations
  • Be available for immediate hire

You bring....

  • A doctorate degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. molecular biology, synthetic biology, plant biotechnology)
  • Five or more years of experience working in a laboratory environment (can include graduate work)
  • At least 2 years of team leadership experience that includes coaching direct reports on performance and personal development, and building a high performing team
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with genomic DNA isolation from various plant species, PCR amplification and generation of amplicon libraries for deep sequencing.
  • Extensive experience with the isolation and quantification of RNA from various plant species and tissues for downstream RNA-Seq library preps
  • Hands-on experience with NGS technologies and equipment (NextSeq, MiSeq, etc.)
  • Experience in analyzing sequence data from Illumina platforms for RNAseq or whole genome sequencing experiments
  • Knowledge of genome editing technologies
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Familiarity with Geneious, Benchling, or other software for sequence analysis
  • Working knowledge of standard office software tools (i.e. Email, word processor, spreadsheet, presentation programs etc.)- experience with Google Suite is a plus
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Curiosity and a desire to continuously learn and have a meaningful impact
  • Creative and strategic thinking, willingness to be bold and take risks
  • A collaborative approach, open to giving and receiving ideas, perspectives, and feedback across multiple site locations

Additional Qualifications…

  • Experience working in a production-scale environment
  • Knowledge of other plant characterization methods (ELISA, ddPCR, Taqman, western blots, southern blots)
  • Experience leading research teams
  • Experience with automation (liquid handlers, tissue disruptors, etc.)
