Essential Functions

  • Develop and execute a plan to bring donors to the unit and the University through active use of the development process, including solicitation of major gifts. 
  • Secure major gifts aimed at meeting the strategic goals of the unit leadership, their programs, disciplines and the University with the expectation of raising $2M-3M gifts annually.
  • Perform visits with alumni or prospects and manage a portfolio of prospective donors.
  • Make asks or prepare proposals for alumni or prospective donors.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of a comprehensive Advancement program in consultation with the Chief Development Officer.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact, along with the Chief Development Officer, for assigned centers, departments and other faculty/staff in coordinating fundraising efforts for these strategic initiatives.
  • Supervise Director of Development, Development Associate or other staff members as requested by the Chief Development Officer.
  • Frequent travel and/or evening and weekend duties are required. 

Additional Responsibilities


  • In consultation with the Chief Development Officer, Dean and the Associate Vice President for Advancement, identify and establish personal contact with current and prospective major gift donors whose interest and financial capacity have the greatest likelihood of strategically meeting the Unit and University fundraising goals.
  • Orchestrate and execute the advancement of relationships with prospective donors through appropriate stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.  
  • Collaborate with appropriate development and academic staff to develop prospect strategies and build relationships. 
  • Use the full complement of the fundraising process, including personal visits and asks to move relationships forward. 
  • Set specific objectives to effectively advance toward solicitation of major gifts.
  • Ensure appropriate coordination with Unit’s corporate and business partners and other unit and University constituencies. 
  • Prepare proposals and solicit prospects for gifts in support of the Unit’s strategic plan and fundraising priorities. 
  • Participate in receptions and other donor events locally and regionally. 
  • Provide stewardship of gifts through the acknowledgement process, assisting with recognition events, dedications, and working with the Director of Development Operations and Donor Stewardship and the Purdue for Life Foundation on appropriate recognition.
  • Become familiar with and understand key initiatives of the Unit relating to faculty, students, instruction and research. 


  • Work with the Unit Development/Advancement staff, Dean, and Associate Vice President for Advancement to develop and implement a fundraising plan, including strategies and a timeline for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual donor prospects.
  • Ensure effective records maintenance, including timely filling of requests for prospect assignments, prospect strategies and contact reports, using the University’s prospect management system. (Reeher, Pipeline, Advance)
  • Report regularly to the Chief Development Officer on the progress toward your annual action plan.
  • Create various communications targeted for donors and prospects.
  • Become adept at using the Purdue for Life Foundation’s database in support of major gift activities. 
  • Continually improve professional competency through training and participation in and/or leadership in professional, organizational and other not-for profit organizations. 


  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required, including the demonstrated ability to communicate well in writing and speak before large groups. 
  • Ability to interpret and articulate the mission of Purdue University.
  • Must be able to interact with stakeholders from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds. 
  • Ability to represent the University with tact and diplomacy at all times required. 
  • Sound judgment, initiative, and ability to collaborate effectively required. 
  • Excellent relationship building, organizational and time management skills required. 
  • Knowledge of finance, planned giving, alumni relations, corporate relations, and advancement communications preferred.
  • Ability to continuously improve professional competency through participation in professional education opportunities necessary. 
  • Good computer skills necessary. 


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three years of experience in fund development including solicitation of major gifts and/or related work experience required. 
  • Experience in higher education or other non-profit organizations a plus but not required.
  • Familiarity with the programs of the School of Management desired but not required.
