Essential Functions

  • Identify, establish and maintain personal contact with current and prospective donors whose interests and financial capacity have the greatest likelihood of strategically meeting College of Engineering and Purdue University fundraising goals. 
  • Advance relationships with prospective donors through appropriate stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship with a minimum annual goal of securing $1 million in gifts and pledges.
  • Collaborate with appropriate development and academic staff to develop prospect strategies and build relationships across the College of Engineering. 
  • Use the full complement of the fundraising process, including personal visits and “asks” to move relationships forward.
  • Set specific objectives to effectively advance toward solicitation of major gifts.
  • Prepare proposals and solicit prospects for gifts in support of the College of Engineering strategic plan and fundraising priorities. Areas of emphasis include the Division of Construction Engineering Management, Division of Environmental & Ecological Engineering (EEE), and other areas in the College of Engineering:
  • Frequent travel and/or evening and weekend duties are required. 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a personal major gift fundraising plan for signature areas in the College of Engineering, including strategies and a timeline for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of alumni and friends.
  • Oversee, as needed, the coordination of special projects, such as naming opportunities and donor recognition activities.
  • Report regularly on the progress toward the College’s major gift activities and annual action plan.
  • Become adept at using Advance and Salesforce databases in support of major gift activities.
  • Ensure effective and accurate records maintenance, including timely fulfillment of prospect requests, prospect strategies, and contact reports.
  • Serve as a liaison to the College of Engineering communication staff toward alumni and donor recognition.
  • Assist with the stewardship of gifts, including the acknowledgement process, coordinating recognition events, planning dedications, and working with the University Advancement Office on appropriate recognition.
  • Become familiar with and understand key initiatives of the College and University relating to faculty and students, instruction and research.
  • Continuously improve professional competency through participation in professional education opportunities. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, including the ability to communicate well in writing and speaking before large groups.
  • Must be able to interact with stakeholders from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational skills are required.
  • Strong leadership skills are necessary.
  • Ability to represent the University with tact and diplomacy at all times.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills are required.
  • Knowledge of finance and planned giving is desirable.
  • Must have an appreciation of the mission of Purdue University and the College of Engineering.
  • Good computer skills are desirable. 

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three or more years in development, including solicitation of major gifts in a non-profit organization preferred.
  • University advancement experience desired.
  • Marketing and communication knowledge is preferred.
  • Familiarity with fundraising and opportunities in engineering and science education is advantageous.
