Job Description:
Looking to make an impact by contributing to development of disruptive artificial intelligence technologies? Are you interested in using your engineering skills to bring autonomous platforms to life? Saab Inc., Autonomous and Undersea Systems division is seeking an innovative Integration and Test Engineer for integration of machine learning software with autonomous platform hardware and developing and conducting scenarios to exercise such systems. Moreover, you will work closely with machine learning data scientists and software engineers to analyze collected data for quality and ensuring that algorithms are performing as expected. Platforms utilized include multi-domain unmanned vehicles, including unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and unmanned surface vessels (USVs). Due to collaboration with Purdue University, this position will be local to West Lafayette, IN. You will need to commute to Purdue University once a week.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Highly collaborative research and development, including the design and development of novel approaches for test and evaluation of AI and autonomous systems with Ph.D.-level subject matter experts and academic researchers.

Executing software and/or hardware testing at various levels of the build process (e.g. unit, subsystem, and system).

Supporting integration activities, troubleshooting and regression testing.

Supporting data analysis and software validation activities, as needed.

Conducting engineering dry runs and formal test events with customer participation.

Developing integration & test plans and procedures and supporting test scripts.
-
Writing test reports documenting the results of formal test events.
-
Conceiving, designing, prototyping, and delivering system integration and test hardware, software, and systems. Ability to code/script in C,C++/Python/MATLAB and work with Arduino, Raspberry or similar embedded systems is desirable.

Conducting alternatives analyses and propose solutions in support of stakeholder change requests.

Presenting and discussing technical concepts, data, tradeoffs, analyses, designs, and performance estimates.

Work closely with academia, government, and small business teammates to design and develop innovative prototypes.

Interfacing with other disciplines to develop/define/implement customer requirements.

Supporting full product lifecycle: development, prototyping, integration, production, verification, delivery, and support as required including operations and in-field/at-sea prototyping and testing.

Participating in technical reviews and status meetings.

Collaborating and communicating with internal and external stakeholders.

Following company standard operating procedures and Quality System requirements.

Planning, organizing, and estimating required effort for responsible tasks, including possibly writing Basis of Estimates (BOEs).

Working within a team environment to achieve goals.
Skills and Experience:

BS in Engineering, or related discipline and 2+ years of relevant experience in advanced system integration and test engineering with broad application and a fundamental understanding of product development life cycles.

Must hold or be able to obtain U.S. DoD SECRET security clearance.

Interest in integration and deployment of machine learning software algorithms on complex, multi-sensor systems and platforms.
-
Understanding of electrical and mechanical interfaces and potential interactions between system components.
-
Ability to specify interfaces including physical/mechanical, electrical, software, and communication protocols.
-
Fundamental understanding of industry accepted design methods and practices, including design spaces/tradeoffs, test data analysis, and requirement/specification change processes.
-
System integration and test development background demonstrating a strong engineering aptitude and good problem-solving skills.
-
Demonstrated ability to resolve issues during design, development, and execution of system engineering activities.
-
Ability to work independently to achieve technical and program requirements with minimal supervision, including the ability to lead others and co-develop with other remote colleagues. Interest and comfort working in a hybrid/remote environment; responsibility to manage time and prioritize tasks efficiently.

Ability to travel and work closely with university professors and students, including but not limited to Purdue University.

Interest in co-development of disruptive new technologies with academia, through integration of hardware and software and demonstration of system prototypes.

Interest in the radio frequency (RF) domain and RF technology (communications and radar).

Interest in Electro-Optical / Infrared (EO/IR) technology.

Interest in working with the military and supporting live demonstrations at military installations.
-
Ability and willingness to support all phases of programs from concept development through final delivery is required; this will sometimes include on-site travel.

Ability to travel up to 10% of your time, both international and domestic.

Master’s Degree in Engineering or related discipline.
-
Prior experience with DoD or with U.S. government customers.
-
Experience with maritime systems development, including autonomous surface and underwater systems.
-
Experience with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and Counter-UAS systems.
-
Experience with EO/IR, passive and active radar integration and more generally software/hardware integration.
-
Experience with in-field testing and validation of systems.
-
Experience or passion in edge processing and working with embedded systems.
-
Experience with DevSecOps, MLOps, CI/CD systems, and associated development philosophies.
-
Experience with ROS, ROS2, ROS-M, Gazebo, Unity and/or Unreal simulations, or game development. Familiarity with the MOOS-IvP maritime autonomy architecture.

Interest in learning through graduate research, conference presentations, publication reviews, and participation in mentorship opportunities.
