Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives

Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with the Director of Strategic Initiatives to develop long-term funding plans that encompass potential corporate, foundation, federal, and individual donor opportunities.
  • In partnership with the Director of Strategic Initiatives, plan and coordinate funding strategies for University-wide, interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Serve as a grant and proposal writer for the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations.
  • In coordination with Major Gift Officers, create funding proposals for individual donors.
  • Submit proposals to corporations, foundations, federal entities and individuals in cooperation with Development staff and University faculty.
  • Develop overall messaging and creation of documents that advance strategic initiatives.
  • Assist CFR team with engaging University faculty to identify potential funding opportunities.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with University Development Staff to:Other duties as assigned.
    • Develop effective gift/grant materials, proposals, case statements, conceptual plans, letters of inquiry, and other corporate and foundation communications.
    • Develop effective major gift proposals for individual prospects in excess of $25,000.
    • Research and analyze information and data for proposal development.
    • Complete funder’s forms required for submission as needed.
    • Prepare customized proposals according to each corporation’s and foundation’s guidelines.
    • Prepare presentations and other written materials for meetings and events with companies and foundations.

 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with faculty members and development staff as well as write successful funding proposals.
  • Demonstrated experience in gift/grant proposal writing with a record of success in securing gifts.
  • Ability to synthesize complex ideas into coherent, compelling proposals.
  • Excellent proofreading and editing skills and precise attention to detail.
  • Collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to University/Foundation business and confidential prospect information.
  • Ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies of an academic community.
  • Ability to represent the University and the Foundation with tact and diplomacy at all times.
  • Strong collegial interpersonal skills.
  • Highly self-motivated with strong organizational skills.
  • Understanding of nature of corporate and foundation philanthropy as it relates to higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, take initiative and set priorities while being flexible.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and timelines successfully.
  • Ability to learn appropriate levels of information about a broad range of academic disciplines and interdisciplinary areas.
  • Knowledge of all facets of the proposal development process including prospect identification, project research, and proposal creation and submission.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Strong computer skills needed.

 Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three-year professional experience with progressively responsible experience in educational fund-raising with specific experience in corporate relations or related experience in a corporate setting preferred.
