Essential Functions

  • Reporting to the Chief Development Officer for Student Life, and working closely with the Director of Convocations (Unit Head) and other development and academic staff, the Director of Development will develop and execute a plan to bring donors to the unit and the University through active use of the development process, including solicitation of major gifts. 
  • Supervise the program’s advancement professional and support staff.
  • Responsible for securing major gifts aimed at meeting the strategic goals of the unit leadership, their programs, disciplines and the University. 
  • Design and implement a comprehensive Advancement program including the management of a donor relations and ticket benefit program. 
  • Maintain a current knowledge of the performing arts as well as develop and maintain local and national performing arts industry relationships. 

Responsibilities

Fundraising:      

  • In consultation with the Chief Development Officer, Unit Head and the Senior Associate Vice President for Advancement, identify and establish personal contact with current and prospective major gift donors whose interest and financial capacity have the greatest likelihood of strategically meeting the Unit and University fundraising goals. 
  • Orchestrate and execute the advancement of relationships with the prospective donors through appropriate stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.  
  • Collaborate with appropriate development and academic staff to develop prospect strategies and build relationships. 
  • Use the full complement of the fundraising process, including personal visits and asks to move relationships forward. 
  • Set specific objectives to effectively advance toward solicitation of major gifts. 
  • Ensure appropriate coordination with Unit’s corporate and business partners and various unit and University constituencies. 
  • Prepare proposals and solicit prospects for gifts in support of the Unit’s strategic plan and fundraising priorities. 
  • Host or co-host receptions and other local donor and/or patron events as well as attend convocations performances and outreach events. 
  • Provide stewardship of gifts including supervising acknowledgement process, coordinating recognition events, planning dedications, and working with the University Development Office on appropriate recognition. 
  • Become familiar with and understand key initiatives of the Unit relating to faculty, students, instruction and research.

Planning/Administration:           

  • Work with the Unit staff and University Advancement staff to plan and implement the advancement program for the unit including development, donor relations, and marketing and communications for advancement. 
  • Work with the Unit Development/Advancement staff, Unit Head and Director for Advancement to develop and implement a fundraising plan, including strategies and a timeline for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual, corporate and foundation donor prospects. 
  • Ensure effective records maintenance, including timely filling of requests for prospect assignments, prospect strategies and contact reports, using the university’s prospect management system (e.g. Pacesetter, ARC, etc.). 
  • Report regularly on the progress toward the Unit’s annual action plan. 
  • Provide vision and coordination for the Unit’s advancement and communications activities. 
  • Provide input to communications targeted at donors, prospects and Convocation’s ticket purchasers. 
  • Become adept at using the Advance database in support of major gift activities. 
  • Facilitate customer service relations with longtime ticket buyers, Friends of Convocations members and prospects. 
  • Provide ticket and donor relations management services onsite at Convocations performances. 
  • Continually improve professional competency through participation in and/or leadership in professional organizational and other not-for profit organizations.

Supervision:      

  • Supervise an administrative/professional advancement staff position.
  • Responsible for making recommendations for hiring, pay adjustments, promotions and training of direct reports as well as performing other supervisory duties.
  • Assign, instruct and review the work of others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of philanthropy and fundraising principles required. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, including the demonstrated ability to communicate well in writing and speak before large groups. 
  • Ability to interpret and articulate the mission of Purdue University needed. 
  • Must be able to interact with stakeholders from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds. 
  • Ability to represent the University with tact and diplomacy at all times required. 
  • Sound judgment, initiative, and ability to collaborate effectively required. 
  • Excellent supervisory, relationship building, organizational and time management skills required. 
  • Knowledge of finance planned giving, alumni relations, corporate relations, and advancement communications preferred. 
  • Ability to continuously improve professional competency through participation in professional education opportunities necessary. 
  • Current knowledge of the performing arts industry is vital. 
  • Good computer skills necessary. 
  • Ability to travel and perform weekend duties required. 

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three years of experience in fund development including solicitation of major gifts and/or related work experience required. 
  • Possess experience in the arts and/or working within an arts organization.
  • Experience in managing/supervising professional staff preferred.
